Goodbye Ozzie!

IOWA FALLS --- William "Ozzie" McCullers, 83, of Iowa Falls, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls; at his request, no formal services will be held; an informal memorial service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Scenic Manor main dining room, Iowa Falls; his body was cremated and his remains buried at Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls

Ozzie was a long time ranger of Camp Ingawanis and a mentor of mine. A sad day for those who knew him.

Wow. A sad day, indeed. I only knew Ozzie somewhat incidentally; though he was there for the one summer I (and Stephen) "worked camp." I know what he meant to the history of the place.

Farewell and cheers, Ozzie.

Very sad, though it seems he lived a reasonably long, and reasonably good life.

That he has someone who considers him a mentor noting his passing and memorializing is quite a feat, and one that few can claim.

Farewell Ozzy. We hardly new thee.

And sorry for despoiling your camp.

Thanks for your kind remarks. He was truly the thylacine of Ingawanis. Ever since he left as camp ranger, camp has never been the same.

One can expect change, but the feel of camp has become something else. It was a magical place for Pat and I, but much of that magic has been lost through the passing of time.

New leadership, some poor choices, and new faces have given this scouting jewel a county park flavor.

I still very much like going to Ingawanis, and I always will. However, I will be looking for that elusive old Ingawanis magic each time that I go. Maybe one day I will catch a wiff of Ozzies pipe burning at the far ends of the camp?

Most importantly, I hope that Jonah can have that same magic born within him as he advances through scouts. I just better not catch him puffing on a pipe until he is an old man.
