Spring Break 2008

A couple of weeks ago we had spring break. You probably wish that I would not bring it up since you don't get one. Anyway, it was a hoot. Sarah and I kicked off our week by going back to the UNI Dome for a large antique show. Boring right? Absolutely not! I love that kind of stuff. I could spend hours just walking around looking at all of the history. I wonder what impact these items had on their owner's lives. I think about all of the people who might have come into contact with these items. what was their life like? What is the items story? Was it a toy that was played with a couple of times and then locked away for decades? Was it loved by a child? Did that child keep it until he or she grew old and died? I also like to see things that I seen before at my grandma's house or things that I once had as a kid. Last year I found a Dukes of Hazzard game. I almost bought it because I had one just like it as a kid. My mom sold at a garage sale on day. She was notorious at giving away my toys when I was gone at school. By the way, we spent 4 hours at the UNI Dome just walking and looking.

Emily had to run four times for track. She was dragging big time. It was good to see her track coach drive by and honk. We had proof that we did what we were asked. We ended up running seven and a half miles that week. I didn't lose much weight because I developed a crazy monster appetite after running. That sucked!

I bought a new energy star water heater. It has a rating of 6.2 and cost me 821 dollars installed. That seem really high, but I wanted it to be energy efficient. I will recoup some of that money in a few years from now. It is a 1/3 larger than the one I had there before because the insulation is all on the inside of the casing. It is a 40 gallon gas powered machine, but should last a good decade or two. My last water heater was installed in 1984. It was still working, but I didn't want to come home one day to a flooded basement because it busted. Twenty-four years was a good life for our first water heater. It washed off many of T's salty and dirty Clogged pores.

To finish off the week I busted up my front steps. I took out my sledge hammer and smashed the hell out of the steps. My dad helped me the next day load it into the Montero. We drove it to Benton Sand and Gravel for a small fee. When I called, the lady said that it was a seven dollar charge per truck load. I explained to her that I really couldn't get a lot of weight in my SUV and was wondering if I could get a reduced rate because I needed a couple of trips. She said, "It doesn't matter if you have a full sized truck or an s-10, the price was the same." When I pulled up with my first load, my dad got out and paid the seven dollars. When I came back for my second trip, the lady was outside smoking. I said, "I am here with my second trip and would like to pay." They wanted you to pay before you dump. She looked at me and said, "It's alright baby, your cool!" I thanked here for her finding me hot and we dumped my last load. My dad was quiet. He was pondering why he had to pay and I didn't. My dad was thinking kind of slow because he hit his head on the back of my Montero three times. The hatch was up above his line of sight because he was wearing a cap and a hood. After the third time, I told him if he does it again to just go home. He also drove too close to the storm sewer in the street in front of my house and roughed up his hubcap. His car is his baby. He was not having a good day.

Sarah and I ended the week by catching a show at the movies for a little date night. We saw Fool's Gold. I have to say that I really enjoyed it. There was a National Treasure feel to it. I DIG those type of movies a lot.

Ahhh, a forced week off. Horrible.

Antique show + new water heater + busted steps = GOOD TIMES!!! though not for me.

I assume you replaced your steps with something else, or is it now only possible to enter your house through the garage?

Non-stop excitement: Spring Break style.

A few thoughts:
- on the running (of course) Good to hear you're at it. 7+ miles in a week is nothing to sneeze at. I've kind of kicked off my 2008 fitness in earnest just this week, myself.
- On the water heater: good to hear! Ours is old, but we did put an insulating sleeve on it this past year. We should all blog our personal inventory for energy efficiencies we've added to our respective homes. Kind of a collective back-pat.
- "I thanked here for her finding me hot and we dumped my last load." I was considering relating a tale that ended the same way, but under entirely different circumstances.
- On the movie: Always nice to hear you & your wife are making time for yourselves as a couple - something that is necessary & often somewhat neglected. I'm really pushing for a 2 nighter away from Rose & Lucy later this summer. Sharon's not sure Rose is ready, but for crying out loud - we still haven't done anything for our 10 year anniversary. And we're coming up on 11 years!!

Meth: The steps have not been replaced yet. I am going to get a load of dirt to slope away from my foundation. After that I plan on having a carpenter put in a low deck with a step down to the front yard/walk. The deck will be extended under my front window and will be no higher than 18 inches. If you are higher than 2 feet you must have a railing on it. I don't want a stupid railing obstructing my view. Sarah and I expect to put chairs out on the little deck to watch the children play in the front yard. When we are old, we can watch the young people walk by and we can yell at kids for walking on our yard. :)

Dan: I hope you get your mini vacation this summer. Sarah and I went to Chicago last summer for three days and it was awesome! Find a place to anchor the kids and get away. Emily is old enough to leave her home alone with Jonah. That is a huge deal and a appreciated milestone.

I bet it is. Of course, we were able to leave Lucy for a couple of days with her grandparents before Rose was born. But now we've got a <2 yr old (still not entirely weaned), that flat out doesn't want to be separated from her momma.

That 10 year trip will take place and it will be that much sweeter when it does happen. You are an awesome pop!
