Mesa, Arizona: Friday

This being our last day to do anything we decided to fill the plate with non-stop excitement. In the morning we went to the Natural History Museum. They have an array of dinosaur, Native American (HoHoKam), and rock exhibits. For a short period of time they had an exhibit on Mars. They had life sized models of the Phoenix and Spirit rovers. It was very interesting. Jonah really like the dinosaurs. I guess I really liked them too. http://www.azmnh.org/Home.aspx

Before the museum opened, we had a few minutes to walk around downtown Mesa. They have many statues nears the corner of every block. We thought that it was cool. Here Jonah and I are hanging out with our kindred spirit (the bear). Bike Lane? Should be Bear Lane.

After the museum, we went to the Goldfield Ghost Town. It is a bit tourist overloaded, but it was still a hoot. Emily and Sarah took a tour of the brothel while Jonah and I took a tour of the reptile exhibit. There was a train ride that circled the town. The spoke of the history of the town and of the Superstitious Mountains that are adjacent to the this town. Very old west type of stuff. I liked it a lot. We even took a mine tour. http://www.goldfieldghosttown.com/

After our adventure at Goldfield, we needed to get some grub. We researched this authentic place in Tortilla Flats, Arizona which was a short drive into Tonto National Forest. It is beautiful except for the power lines EVERYWHERE! It is called a forest because the saguaro cactus is technically a tree. A tree is defined as a plant with generally one main stem and is fifteen feet or higher.

Great trip.

Some funny stuff in this post:

HoHoKam? Sounds like a webcam pointing at the last delicious pastry.

That bear seems to be struggling under your weight, or Jonah pulled an Empire Strikes Back Imperial Walker move on him.

And what kind of grub did you find in Tortilla Flats? Saguaro burgers?

A green chile burger with fries. The resturant is very small and the walls are covered in dollar bills.

Tortilla Flats is the end of the road. Well paved road anyway. Past TF you are on the rough Apache Trail.

Coolio.

In the ghost town, did a jealous old miner lock you in a jail like in The Brady Bunch?

If Cory is ever a roving television reporter, he'll be carrying the HoHoKam.

Alright, that's the second HoHoKam joke. Don't go disrespecting the native people of this area.

The mine tour makes you believe that you travel down hundreds of feet into a mine shaft. It feels real as the entire elevator is rocking back and forth. However, when we exit the shaft we walk up about 15 steps and we are outside again. To get to the elevator you had to walk down about 15 steps. Nice illusion, but they balk at the end. You should tak another elevator ride up and nobody would ever know that the mine is a hoax.
