After the game we went back to the Bear Cave and told our war stories. Jonah was going to lay down for a couple hour nap so I suggested that we go to a neighboring school for some basketball. Why basketball you might be asking yourself? Well it it true that my leg was very sore and I could not move very well, but I thought that I could shoot alright. Before we ventured out of the Montero, Dan called home to say hello to his family. Dan and I shot Around the World. It was a great game that witnessed many bold moves by both of us. towards the end, I was risking it foolishly because I ran into a troubled spot. I could not hit it to save my life. Dan to his honor hung around to give me a fighting chance, but eventually put the game away. Good sport my fine friend!
After the long game of Around the World, I decided to go for broke. I was going to hurt myself further or I was going to stretch things out enough to where I would be able to move like a 50 year old as opposed to an 150 year old. We played a nice and casual game to 11. I started off HOT! I then cooled and Dan was victorious. I don't know how good he felt about kicking a one legged man's butt, but he did kick it with as much grace as one could have. Fantastic form Ole Danny Boy!
Once we squeeze out our last basketball drop we went out on a snipe hunt. The snipe being a coffee place between the school and my cave. I knew that there was a coffee shop in the UNI bookstore so I drove us around some construction and through some residential areas to get us there. We parked close and walked inside. To my surprise, the coffee stand/shop was closed. Well, no coffee for Dan. On a side note, Dan got to see A LOT of this is where my teacher friend lives and this is where my sister lives. He got the grand flipping tour alright. I have to laugh because I am sure that he didn't care about any of that. Thanks for letting me show silly stuff that is of no interest to you.
No coffee and cold, we drove back to the cave to warm up. I started cooking Dan and my family a supper good enough for kings. I made rice spaggetti with portabella mushroom sauce as the main dish. We also had romano and herb garlic slices, mixed vegetables, and brown rice. It was good! After supper I went outside to get the fire started. It is a fact that my fire pit is adjacent to the busy 1st street. Cars were driving by and honking. Not the best place for a fire, but it was the best place in my yard to have a fire pit. We made smores with my family and enjoyed a couple of fine beverages. It was rather chilly, but the fire was warm. Sarah and Jonah went inside after the smores. Dan, Emily and I threw the illuminator around for a spell. We even played some short games of two in one. Dan and I played all time QB. Emily showed up to play and made some amazing catches. You have to love the illuminator because it looks like your throwing around a hot coal to the average Joe.
During our football bonanza, Emily decided that she wanted to be on a team all by herself. Well Dan and I knew that we needed to dial it way down by this time. I suggested that Dan go out for a pass while I closed my eyes. He had to make a continuous noise so that I could use echolocation to find him. Well it took only two tries before we made the first ever blind QB to receiver completion. Shortly after that Dan threw the first ever blind QB touchdown. I know that Emily and I had a hoot. Soon after this Emily went inside to get ready for bed.
Returning to the fire, Dan was content to sit there a while longer because he had not yet frozen his fingers and toes completely off as of yet. I went inside to fetch him a glass for his beer. He told me that it tastes better in a glass because you can smell it. The small opening of the bottle doesn't allow you to get the full affect or savor the quality of the beer. As the fire died so did Dan's tolerance for the cold. We went inside after we extinquished the fire in a pool of CF tap.
Inside seemed to be worse for Dan then outside. This once sturdy frame became the shell of the man he use to be. He was wrapped in blankets and asked for a portable space heater. I laughed and said that I had no such crazy device. I thought a heated board game would get him warmed up, so I grabbed the Return of the Jedi game that I haven't played since the movie first came out. It was the pit creature game. Dan had it right on his blog. The game was fun and interesting. Roy came out to play during this trusty battle. Roy decided that he wanted to know what cards I had, so he leaned over and looked at my cards boldly. I said, "What the hell are you doing?" Roy replied, "I just wanted to know what cards you had." I realized that Dan was not trying to cheat, it was just Roy, so I laughed and played on. Dan or Roy eventually won the game by two points. Well done young padawan!
The game was placed back upon the shelf for another long rest and Dan and I retired for the night. I think Dan stayed up to watch some cable before he actually fell asleep. I was beat and fell asleep after hitting the pillow. Before we knew it morning was here.
I offered to make another breakfast, but it was declined and Dan made a quick escape. I hope that his stop up the street for breakfast wasn't because I had no staples. I would have been happy to join him if he wanted company. I hope you want to visit again Dan. We really enjoyed your visit with us at the Bear Cave!

Great recap. A few notes:
- I enjoyed getting some Cory context (e.g. riding around in the car, seeing places of people you know) more than you think. It's a weird thing, as host. It's the balance between showing someone the context of your life that makes everything else sort of fall into place, and being JBArt, who imprisons someone in the back of his car & drives them around to every greenhouse in southern MN. But I think everyone who plays host should have the chance to do a little show & tell. A chance to add honest-to-God 3D visual to this infernal blogging correspondence, which constitues about 90% of our relationship.
- Funny, as you run through the various things of the day: (driving me around looking for coffee, me trying to explain the LUDICROUS concept of beer in a glass, me bundled up & inquiring about a space heater. I can almost feel Mixdorf not being surprised by a bit of it, and almost being pleasantly comforted by its familiarity.
- The Roy thing. HILARIOUS! I had almost forgetten about that.
- On the final morning: as much a part of any weekend visit as non-stop excitement, is the traditional beating of a hasty retreat on the final morning. But my friend, I would have packed you up & brought you along to Happy Chef in a HEARTBEAT, had I known you were free to go. I thought you were going to be busy picking out some shiny brown shoes for you & the boy and slipping on your sweater-vests, and doing other such pre-church activities. Next time.
Great times, by the way.
So glad I came down to your little neck of the woods!
Thank you for your STURDY comments! I went crazy on the weekend write-up. I felt inclined to be the historian, thus every moment was documented. I ran out of photos and movies. They would have brought the events to life even more than my few short words.
Are you able to use the photos to show Lucy and Sharon?
Completely Amazing
They have seen the pix. I also showed them this shot of us around the firepit: http://www.channel3000.com/image/10563803/detail.html
