Well, let's blow the dust off this thing and resurrect it from the dead. It has been awhile since I blogged and I want to write about something fun. Let me first start off by saying that this trip was possible by my fumbling up the real plans of seeing Meth this summer. With that all said, I will try to give an accurate account of what went down.
Saturday: Mighty Tom had to take a huge test Saturday morning so I decided to leave at about 8:30 my time (Central) and arrive around 3 or 4 his time (Eastern). With a full tank of gas in the Mazda I headed out of town. I listened to 4 hours of GK talk about Lake Wobegon, 2 hours of worship music, and 2 hours of folk music that my Media Specialist made for me last spring. It took me longer to get there because of the car troubles.
Outside of Bloomington my car started to act up. The overdrive light came on and it does so when the overdrive on my car's transmission is off. When it is off it can flip up your transmission if you travel too far with the overdrive off and at higher speeds. I started to freak out because the last time this happened the transmission was shot and I had to shell out $1,200 bucks to get it rebuilt. I drove it to a Steak and Shake to call Sarah. After a few minutes started the car to see what it would do and if I could drive to a car shop. Well, the light went off and I drove around looking and asking for help. Eventually I pulled into an Advanced Auto Store. The young guy totally helped me and gave me the confidence to try to push forward towards Indiana. Meanwhile, I had a few calls to Sarah and she told me what she found out on the internet about my problem. Those conversations let me to believe that I could try to make it to Mighty Tom's house. Once I got there I could see a dealership on Monday if I needed to.
I arrived outside of T.H. at around 6-6:30. Mighty Tom asked me to call him when I got into town so that he could guide me in safely and so that I could avoid construction near his house. I felt like Spock talking to the Enterprise. "Gallileo to Enterprise, this is Spock!" What a sight to see as I turned that final turn towards his house. Mighty Tom was outside his house and waiting for me in his driveway. I pulled my troubled car into his driveway and opened my door. He reached in to give me a monster handshake. He then replied with a, "Good Lord! You just dropped the temperature of T.H. by 20 degrees when you opened the car door." I have to admit that I had the air on coldest most of my trip. What can I say? We all know that I run hot most of the year.
After some good driveway bonding and affection we went inside then outside to say high to the family. We were all hungry and it was getting to be about 7-7:30. I knew that Molls had to be getting hungry even though the entire Tom clan denied being hungry because of my late arrival. Mighty Tom spent the week assembling a tailgating grill his dad won for him in hopes of using it when I got to Indiana. It was a beautiful little gas grill and it was all together a ready for use. However, he didn't have any food yet to cook on it. He and I went into his minivan and drove to his grocery store. As we went up and down each isle at least four times looking for the things we needed for a great grilling experience we had some good conversation. This conversation is the reason for going up and down each isle four times. We both got distracted and obviously can't do two things at the same time. The last thing on the list was hamburger. I found some nice lean ground chuck in one fridge, but Mighty Tom was looking for already made patties. He found some thin cuts and he bought them.
When we arrived back at his house it was almost 8:30. He started his new gas grill and admits he never used a gas grill before. A few minutes later I checked the temperature of the grill. It was not hot at all. He turned it on but it was on the lowest setting possible. I turned it up for him. The two adult Toms came out with the burgers a few minutes after I turned up the gas. He had to reform the patties anyway because they were too thin and frail to put on the grill. I cooked the burgers and used MT's new grill set, which was almost bigger than his grill, to cook these burgers. The thermometer to check the internal temp was cool. I had fun cooking and talking to my hosts. As I bit into my burger I noticed that something was up with these burgers. Mighty Tome bought cube steak. They were very tough and hard to tear with my teeth. But they were also very delicious. Thank you Mighty Tom for a memory that I will have for a long time. I would probably forget regular burgers, but these were special. I might also add that my drinks were great and we tried the Budweiser Lime. Molls knocked over MT's when he wasn't looking and ran away inside. When MT came out with more drinks for his wife and I we just looked at him when he noticed that his drink was spilled. "What?, I said"
After Molls went to bed MT and I watched one of the greatest movies ever made. If you don't know what that is then I will tell you. It is Nacho Libre. We think that it is great and MT says that he is reminded of me when he watches this movie. The rest of the weekend I was known as Uncle Nacho.
MT, please fill in any holes that I missed if you so desire.
p.s. Ramses is the number one!

OK - so yes I had a huge test on Sat. morn - which I took, returned home and continued preparing for his majesty. I was very excited at this point. I felt proud scrubbing his toliet - as it became cleaner and cleaner I became all the more excited, imagining his grand usage. It was as if I was putting the final shine on a kingly throne. A throne he would sit upon, perhaps with a turkey leg. He had his car trouble and phone calls added to the suspense. Would he turn away? Would he make it in? What can I do?
He rolled in and did indeed lower the temperature! Wow - I was thrown back from the force of the cold air escaping from his vehicle. It was as if the air itself was too cold and was trying to warm up in the Indiana climate. Lots of laughing and hooting, our energies exploring each others newly established contact.
I showed his ass in and let the girls have a good look at him. Then off to the store and yes, my grilling. Cubed steak, whatever that is, not the best choice for grilling. A funny memory. But good enough, we had a fire, some smores, cantelope and cottage cheese (Cory would eat more, and with French dressing too, later on). Good convo and a fun viewing of Libre. We let the cicadas take us into a good night's rest.
Coming up...the host learns of an odd effect Kid Rock has on his guest...

I greatly appreciate your cleaning, and the throne was sparkling up to the point in which I made it not sparkle.
Thank you for mentioning the facts about the wonderful fire (biting flies included)and the cottage cheese. Man that was good melon. I even got Molls to try it with French dressing. It might be an taste that you have to get use to?
French dressing on melon?
Nasty.
Sounds like much fun groping and laughing was had by all.
Jesus H. Christ. The last time I saw the buying, grilling, and eating of meat discussed so thoroughly was at my family & friends annual Iowa picnic out by Dunkerton.
Glad you guys kicked things off in style.
One question: why in the world, if he had to wait for you to arrive after 7:30 pm, did Mighty Tom not already have the fixins ready to go? Are we to assume he sat in his driveway, waiting, from lunch onward?
Meth- French dressing on the cottage cheese. Just a little to give it a bit of a tangy taste. It works well.
Dan- I want to paint a very accurate picture of what went down. Yes, you can assume that he was waiting in the driveway since lunch. I thank him for his excitement and his spotless cleaning.
And he remains in the place you last saw him, like a loyal dog, until you return again.
By the way - "Ramses is number one!" What the hell is that all about? Isn't that a brand of condom?
I would not say such things if I were you!
Ramses is the wrestler in Nacho Libre that Jack Black admires. He is the number one!
There is a song on the soundtrack that is about this as well. The soundtrack is awesome!
Sunday and Monday are coming soon.
There's more?
I though after a 'burger' and a cuddle you just headed back.
Oh, there is a ton more. Saturday is just one day in a funny adventure.
Incredible!
Will this saga EVER continue, or did CF Bear truly just drive back the same day.
